How to Use Tallow Balm: Amount, Routine, Tips
A tallow balm behaves differently from a classic cream: firm in the jar, melting on the skin. Knowing how to use tallow balm properly comes down to three things: the right amount, the right technique and the right place in your routine. Here is everything explained step by step.
In short
Take a pea-sized amount, warm it between your fingertips until it melts, then press it gently onto cleansed skin on your face and neck before massaging it in. The balm is your last skincare step, followed only by sunscreen in the morning. Less is more: you can always add a little extra if needed.
Why is tallow balm used differently from a cream?
Most classic creams consist largely of water. A tallow balm, by contrast, is water-free and made of fats and oils. Grass-fed beef tallow is fairly firm at room temperature and only softens with body heat. That is why the balm looks compact in the jar but turns into a smooth, oil-like texture between your fingers.
Because it contains no water, a balm is also very economical. You need far less product than you would with a cream. The most common reason for a greasy feel is simply using too much.
How much tallow balm do you need?
As a guide, use a pea-sized amount for face and neck. Adjust it to your skin type and the season:
| Situation | Suggested amount |
|---|---|
| Normal skin | Pea-sized |
| Very dry skin, winter | Pea-sized, plus a little extra on dry patches if needed |
| Combination skin | Slightly less, focus on cheeks rather than the T-zone |
| Oily skin | Rice-grain-sized to start, increase slowly |
With daily use, a 50 ml jar lasts roughly 6 to 8 weeks and a 100 ml jar about 3 to 4 months.
Step by step: how to apply the balm
- Cleanse: wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat it dry. Slightly damp skin is fine; the balm actually spreads especially easily on it.
- Scoop: take a pea-sized amount from the jar with clean, dry fingers or a small spatula.
- Warm: rub the balm between your fingertips for a few seconds until it melts and looks slightly glossy.
- Press: press your fingertips gently onto forehead, cheeks, chin and neck. This distributes the product evenly without rubbing.
- Massage: work the balm in with small circular movements from the centre outwards, avoiding the immediate eye area.
- Let it settle: give the balm a minute or two before applying sunscreen or makeup.
Tip: If your skin is still noticeably shiny after five minutes, you used too much. Briefly press a clean tissue onto your skin to lift the excess and use a little less next time.
Where does the balm go in your routine?
The basic rule is: thinnest to thickest. Watery products such as toners or serums go first, and the balm, as the richest step, goes last. It forms a caring layer over everything underneath.
- Morning: cleanse, optional watery serum, balm, then sunscreen.
- Evening: cleanse (thoroughly if you wore makeup), optional serum, balm as the final step.
You do not need a long routine. Plenty of people do perfectly well with just a cleanser and a balm. Whether you use one balm morning and night or two different ones is a matter of preference and how your skin feels.
Which mistakes should you avoid?
- Too much product: the most common mistake. Start small and add more if needed.
- Applying it cold: without warming, the balm is hard to spread and absorbs unevenly.
- Rubbing hard: gentle pressing and massaging is kinder to the skin.
- Wet fingers in the jar: water does not belong in a water-free product. Always use dry fingers or a spatula.
- Judging too quickly: give your skin a few weeks to get used to a new product.
How should you store tallow balm?
Keep the jar somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight, and close the lid after each use. Because tallow reacts to temperature, the texture is a little firmer in winter and a little softer in summer. That is normal and does not affect quality. If the balm feels very firm, just warm it a bit longer between your fingers.
Note: Many tallow balms contain essential oils such as tea tree or lavender oil. Do a patch test before first use: apply a little balm to the inside of your elbow and wait 24 hours. If you notice redness or itching, stop using the product. For any skin condition, please see a dermatologist.

Can I wear makeup over tallow balm?
Yes. Use a fairly small amount in the morning, let the balm settle for a minute or two, then apply sunscreen and makeup. A lighter day formula usually works better for this than a rich night balm.
Why has my balm turned grainy?
Natural fats can form small crystals when temperatures fluctuate strongly. This is purely cosmetic. The grains melt as you warm the balm between your fingers and spread as usual.
How quickly does tallow balm absorb?
That depends on the amount, your skin type and the formula. Usually skin feels cared for and no longer shiny after a few minutes. If a noticeable film remains, you used too much.
Do I have to use the balm every day?
No, you can adjust how often you use it to how your skin feels. Many people use it morning and evening, others only at night or only on particularly dry days.
